Himasha Gunasekara – Steadfastness personified

In a world that often demands instant results, Himasha Gunasekara stands as a shining example of the power of patience and persistence. This young Asian woman, who has been living in New Zealand home for the past 4 years, has defied the odds and shattered glass ceilings with her unwavering determination and resilience.

For Himasha, the journey to success has been paved with challenges, setbacks, and resistance, but her steadfast approach has been the key to maintaining momentum. “Change takes time, and setbacks are common. Patience and persistence were crucial for maintaining momentum and overcoming resistance over the long term,” she shares.

Himasha’s leadership style is rooted in leading by example, and her achievements are evidence of this philosophy. She says, “I’ve always led by example, and I am glad that I could prove a woman can successfully finish a PhD while raising a happy baby and a full-time job while settling in a new country. Any circumstances should not stop a woman from achieving her goals and it’s a matter of being mindful and setting priorities accordingly”.

The mantra that has guided Himasha through her challenges is simple yet profound: “To be patient and persistent.” These words have become more than just a catchphrase; they are a way of life that has propelled her forward, even in the face of adversity.

Himasha’s journey has been profoundly shaped by her participation in the Ethnic Women’s Leadership program, where she witnessed firsthand the power of mentorship and support. “I admire the culture of mentorship and support received through the ethnic women leadership program, where women stood up for fellow women,” she reflects.

In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, Himasha is deeply involved in her community. She volunteers as a health and wellbeing supporter, advocating for the holistic wellness of those around her. Moreover, she is a freelance podcaster at Plains FM, where she amplifies voices and stories that often go unheard, furthering the cause of inclusivity and representation.

In Himasha’s eyes, the future holds the promise of an expansion of mentorship networks and support systems specifically designed to uplift women in their professional journeys. These networks will not only provide guidance and resources but also foster a sense of community and belonging, helping to navigate the challenges that women often face in leadership roles.

Himasha Gunasekara’s story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of ethnic women leaders who embrace patience and persistence as their guiding principles. Through her unwavering determination and her commitment to leading by example, she has proven that with unwavering focus and a supportive community, anything is possible.
